Leigha Walker, a resilient mother from Story County, Iowa, has shown that with determination, community support, and a little help from programs like Embrace Iowa, dreams can become a reality. Her inspiring journey from struggle to success is a testament to the power of kindness and perseverance.

Overcoming Life’s Obstacles

Leigha Walker’s life has been anything but easy in recent years. As a mother of three, she faced a series of challenges that tested her strength and resolve. Just when she thought she was regaining stability, her partner was severely injured in a car accident. The incident triggered a cascade of difficulties, including housing issues, financial strain, and the added responsibility of addressing her children’s educational needs.

Despite these hurdles, Walker remained steadfast in her goal of completing her education. She was pursuing an associate of applied science degree in early childhood education at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) when another setback forced her to pause her studies. Complications from her last pregnancy made it impossible to attend classes, leaving her ineligible for financial aid and her dreams of graduation seemingly out of reach.

The Role of Embrace Iowa

Enter Embrace Iowa, a charitable initiative managed by the Iowa Community Action Association. For over two decades, this program has provided financial assistance to individuals and families facing urgent and critical needs. Funded by the generous contributions of Des Moines Register readers, Embrace Iowa offers grants of up to $750 to those who demonstrate a pressing financial emergency.

Walker first learned about Embrace Iowa during an earlier difficult period but was not eligible for assistance at the time. However, her situation took a turn for the worse, prompting her to reapply. With guidance from Haley Broich, a dedicated staff member at Mid-Iowa Community Action, Walker successfully navigated the application process and secured the funds she needed to cover her remaining tuition costs.

“The money they invested in me going back to school will help so many families in the future,” Walker said, emphasizing her gratitude and determination to pay it forward.

A Bright Future Ahead

The support from Embrace Iowa reignited Walker’s educational journey. With just one semester remaining, she is now on track to graduate with an impressive list of accomplishments: a teaching certificate, an associate of applied science degree in early childhood education, a liberal arts associate degree, and honors recognition.

Walker’s ambitions don’t stop there. She is exploring careers in teaching, social work, or continuing her academic journey to make an even greater impact.

Beyond her personal achievements, Walker has already started giving back. Inspired by the support she received, she created a “Parenting Club” at DMACC. This initiative provides guidance and resources to other parents balancing the demands of higher education and childcare.

The Impact of Embrace Iowa

Embrace Iowa’s unique approach ensures that every dollar donated makes a tangible difference. Funds are sent directly to creditors, such as landlords or utility companies, ensuring transparency and accountability. Importantly, none of the donations are used for administrative costs, allowing every contribution to directly benefit those in need.

Applicants must meet specific criteria, including a gross annual income at or below 200% of federal poverty guidelines. The program addresses a wide range of urgent needs, from medical expenses and rent to utility bills and educational costs.

In Walker’s case, the assistance she received not only helped her continue her education but also inspired her to become a mentor and advocate for others. Her story is just one example of how Embrace Iowa is changing lives across the state.
